Can Osteopathy Be Covered by Medicare? Here’s What You Need to Know
Osteopathy is a hands-on therapy that helps with chronic pain and mobility issues, but can it be covered by Medicare? The answer is yes! Osteopathy can be partially covered by Medicare if you meet specific eligibility criteria. Here’s how you can access rebates and what you need to know about the process.
How Does Medicare Cover Osteopathy?
Medicare provides partial rebates for osteopathy under the Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Plan, formerly known as the Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) Plan. These plans support individuals with chronic or complex health conditions by subsidising certain allied health services.
To access a Medicare rebate for osteopathy, you’ll need the following:
- A referral from your GP. This is essential and must include osteopathy in your care plan.
- Medicare card. Necessary to claim the rebate.
- Any type of payment to cover the gap. Please see our price list: HERE.
How Much Is the Medicare Rebate for Osteopathy?
The current Medicare rebate is $60.35 per osteopathy session (as of 2024). However, this does not cover the entire cost of the appointment, so there will be an out-of-pocket expense. If you bring your Medicare card or know your Medicare number, you can claim the rebate on the spot using our HICAPS machine and simply pay the gap. Please note that Stable Osteopathy does not accept cash payments.
How Many Sessions Are Covered by Medicare?
Medicare allows up to five sessions per calendar year under the CDM Plan. These five sessions can be split between different allied health services if needed, such as physiotherapy or podiatry, based on your GP’s recommendations.
If your GP allocates all five sessions to osteopathy, they will note this on your referral. Keep in mind that you’ll need a new referral every year, as the allocation resets annually.
Who Qualifies for a Medicare Rebate?
The CDM Plan is available for individuals with chronic or complex medical conditions requiring ongoing care. Examples include:
- Long-term musculoskeletal conditions (e.g., back pain, arthritis)
- Cardiovascular
- Diabetes
- Recovery from
A chronic condition is one that has persisted for six months or longer. There is no definitive list of qualifying conditions, so your GP will determine if you’re eligible.
Making Osteopathy More Accessible
Osteopathy offers a holistic approach to treating pain, improving mobility, and enhancing overall wellbeing. If you have a chronic condition, Medicare rebates can make this therapy more affordable and accessible.
Speak with your GP to discuss your eligibility for the CDM Plan and how osteopathy can be part of your care.
